L2TD Part B - Videos Online

I have picked this video as it done by my work mates for the Mashitup 2009 Staff entry . They have a great sense of humour and don't mind having and making fun of themselves. They are GREAT.

L2TD Part B - More Google

View My world in a larger map

I have made my map with the places I go to on a very regular basis. I have not included where I live but it is close too.

L2TD Part B - Web browsers

I use FireFox at home and Internet explorer at work. I also have a portable FireFox on my portable drive - this allows me to save my favourites from home and take them on the road with me. I use a few add-ons with FireFox which gives it the advantage over explorer.
My son has google chrome on his laptop so I have had a go with it and I find it much the same as FireFox. I have also used safari on a Mac and I think it is the same as FireFox. The open source ones seem to run a bit smoother that explorer to me.
The add-ons for FireFox that i think would work well in the library environment are - Imtranslator, Incredible bookmarks, IE Tab, and Fox lingo Translator.

L2TD Part B - Podcast & Audio

I have helped record an author talk for a podcast but podcasts is not something that I listen to. I hear them advertised( like on the TV and radio) but I have not listened to any. After reading testdrive #3 - I am more keen to experiment with them.
The podcast on NSW library site were very easy to access unlike streaming from Radio National, it took awhile to connect. I like the idea of listening abit before downloading. The transcript of the Radio National podcast is good too for people with hearing difficulties.
I did a search for family history podcasts in google - and low and behold I had 36200000 hits but I looked at the first 3 and I am hooked. I got hold of some headphones and away I went - even my kids were giving me funny looks. My family history is about to get an overhaul because of the new information I have now. I think I will have to invest in a MP3 player for myself. I might have to find time to make my own podcasts on my family.

L2TD Part B - Mashups

We have used Mashups to make virtual tours of our branches.
I investigated "Suburbview". It was very interesting and I researched my local area and some closer to my son's uni. It gave a good insight into the costs and location but having the images just made the choices easier. Written descriptions of properties is open to your imagination but having the images and street view made it a reality - you could see what you were getting.
I aslo looked at the Mashup awards and the New York street was impressive - maybe we coulddo that with our library refurbishment to add to the local history information on our libraries. I have been involved in the Moreton Bay Libraries Mashitup program for the past 2 years and I am still impressed with the topics and ideas people come up with for mashups - the list is endless. Originality is the best - keep creating.

L2TD Part B - Online applications and tools

When working in libraries there is many a time you need to work with a group of collegues but you are located at different branches. Google Docs allows for group work/input into working documents without all participants being in the one room. This saves time and money. Less travel - more work time. 1 document = all information. I even recommend to some of our patrons to make their resumes in Google docs so that they can modify it and have access to it 24/7 to apply for jobs. I personal use Google docs to keep up-to-date with my cousins in England as we work on the family tree.

Extra Entry

Some of my entries have been on mass as I have been busy working on the technical side of a program we have been running at work for Moreton Bay Region Libraries. Mashitup 2009. I have been uploading and creating the DVD's for the finals of this program. To find out more about the program go to www.myspace.com/mashitup_filmfest and to see this years entries http://www.youtube.com/ and search for mashitup09. I believe there are still tickets available for the finals night at Redcliffe on the 10th July. Get your free tickets from www.myspace.com/mashitup_filmfest Great family night. See the top 20 entries from the Mashitup 2009 program on the big screen.

Conclusion

I have thoroughly enjoyed this program and style of learning. It has given me more confidence and improved my knowledge of the Web 2.0 and how to use these options in the library service. I will be sharing my new knowledge with my work team to help and encourage them to learn these skills too. Great work SLQ and Mary. Brilliant work. Keep it up. Please let me know when there is more to learn and challenge us.

Library Thing

What a great tool. I am never going to lose my little blue indexed book again. I have used this book to record what books I have read but now......Library thing can do this for me and I will always have this information available online as long as I have a computer.

This tool would be great for book clubs to record their reviews and see what other book groups think too. It is so easy to use and register. I might even pay for an unlimited account as my list of readings increases.

Try this site- Delicious Bookmarks

I think this is a great tool and it has so much to offer. I am starting to add my favourites and bookmarks but it may take me awhile to sort and tag them. I think this will be a very handy tool for at work. We have a games session that we had made a list of sites that offer free online games that we have listed as being suitable to the children that come to the sessions. I will be adding these sites to Delicious so that I can have access worldwide. The idea of sharing sites is brilliant as someone might have already found some good sites and by sharing it can reduce others search time. Can't wait to add, tag and share.

RSS feeds

I have been using a RSS and reader from Google for a while. My choice of feeds include -
Next Reads from my library http://feeds.feedburner.com/MbrcLibraryRss , I have advised quite a few of my library patrons to join this feed so that they can keep up-to-date with what is happening in our libraries.

school library journal http://feeds.feedburner.com/SchoolLibraryJournal-TechnologyNews
and

forever geeks http://www.forevergeek.com/feed/

I have made my home page for my gmail to igoogle page and when i log in it not only shows my emails but my RSS feeds too.

I think our library could also use a RSS feed for when we start our youth book club and it will depend on which social networking tools we use. I am thinking maybe a blog site that the youth can receive RSS feeds when we update the blog.

Also if a libray has a special team working on a project, by having a RSS feed connected say to a blog site etc then all the staff involved can be receiving feeds when any of their team add to the blog so this may be a great way of keeping ontop of a project.

Social networking

We have used myspace for social networking at work for the mashitup program that we run. We use this for communicating to the participates and anyone else interested in the program. We even have it linked so that you can order your final show tickets online.
Participants can become our friends and whenever we have new information we just post it and it is surprising to see how many follow the page.
Check it out
www.myspace.com/mashitup_filmfest

We are also looking at using a social networking tool for our new youth book clubs. We won't know which one until we have a talk with the group and see which one they might like.

The SLQ wiki

I went to the site for the SLQ wiki, joined as an author and posted my comment. I like the idea of being able to do this but I now have various accounts email, wiki, flickr..... I am becoming a little confused as to which logon and password to use and when. But as this is all part of the learning, then I must make more space in my brain not only for the knowledge that I am getting but for the extra passwords too.

Time Zone

Hey I found the time zone setting and now it should all be good.

What time zone am I in???

Every time I post something, I look at the time is states - it looks like I am a real early bird but that is not correct , well I am up around 6am most week days but the week ends well that's a different matter. I have looked at the setting and put in my location ( I did not have one before) so lets see if this changes anything.

my sharing photo part 2

I finally got it to work. I love this photo it reminds me some much of my own dog. We used to dress him up but now that he is 11 we try not to annoy him too much.

my sharing photo

I am having trouble getting the uploaded photo to work. The one I use from my computer goes up but not the one from flickr or picasa. Anyway I will keep trying and see what happens. This is what they call learning.

The Start

Well here I am. Starting something that I think I will enjoy but am unsure where it will lead me. Hopefully well into Web 2.0. I am a bit nervous but excited at the same time knowing that other people will be looking at this. As I move through this learning I hope to be able to learn and share with others and enjoy the experience. Talk soon.
